Santa Cruz is where the redwoods run out at the ocean, and the town in between has spent a century declining to grow up.

The Boardwalk has been running since 1907 and still has a wooden coaster. Steamer Lane draws surfers who've been paddling out at the same spot for forty years, and the water is cold enough all year that everyone wears a wetsuit and nobody complains. The university sits up in the trees above town, which is why the population arrives and leaves on an academic calendar. West Cliff runs along the edge of the water. Natural Bridges is at the end of it.
