Redwood City

Redwood City has a slogan carved into the side of its downtown, and it is the best civic slogan in California: Climate Best By Government Test.

The claim came from a weather comparison in the 1920s, the city put it up in neon, and nobody has ever had the nerve to take it down. It's also more or less true — the town sits in a gap in the coastal hills that spares it the worst of the fog.

It's the county seat, and the only deepwater port in the South Bay, which is why there's a working harbor at the end of a city most people drive past on the 101. Courthouse Square anchors a downtown that came back from the dead, the Fox Theatre still runs, and the redwoods the name came from went out through that port to build San Francisco.
