Sacramento is the capital, the confluence of two rivers, and the most shaded city of its size in the country — a fact residents will bring up unprompted in July.

The city grew out of the Gold Rush and the railroad, and Old Sacramento still has the boardwalks to prove it. Midtown's numbered-and-lettered grid is walkable in a way most California cities gave up on. The American River Parkway runs thirty-odd miles through the middle of it, which is why so much of the city is on a bike. And the Delta breeze arrives most summer evenings and drops the temperature twenty degrees, which is the single most important thing to understand about living here.

Farm-to-fork isn't a slogan in Sacramento so much as a description of the drive to work.
