Bakersfield is a country music town, an oil town and a farm town, and it has never been especially interested in what the coast makes of that.

This collection is our California bear flag design, made for Bakersfield, on shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, hooded tees, hats, mugs, travel mugs, tumblers, pint glasses, wine glasses, blankets, totes and stickers.

The Bakersfield Sound came out of here in the 1950s and 60s — Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, a harder and twangier answer to what Nashville was doing, played loud in bars by people whose families had come west during the Dust Bowl and stayed. The Basque restaurants are still here, still serving family-style, still enormous. The Kern River comes down out of the Sierra just east of town, and the mountains behind it are the reason Bakersfield is a gateway and not an endpoint.

It's the ninth-largest city in California and the one most often left off the list.
