Carmel-by-the-Sea has no street addresses. Houses have names instead, and mail goes to the post office, where people have collected it in person for over a century.

The town was founded by artists and writers who wanted somewhere cheap and beautiful, and it has spent the years since becoming expensive while keeping the strange rules that came from that beginning — no streetlights, no neon, no chain signage, and a longstanding ordinance about wearing high heels on the uneven sidewalks. The pines were planted deliberately and never cleared for a grid.

The beach at the bottom of Ocean Avenue is white sand and cold water, with cypress leaning the way the wind pushed them.
