San Luis Obispo is almost exactly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and has built an entire identity out of being neither.

Everyone calls it SLO. Cal Poly sits above town and sets the rhythm of the year. Thursday night the farmers market closes Higuera Street and turns downtown into something between a market and a block party, and it has done this every week for decades.

Behind the town are the Nine Sisters — a chain of volcanic peaks running out to Morro Rock at the ocean. Bishop Peak is the one everybody climbs. The mission it's named for has been there since 1772. And yes, there's an alley downtown covered entirely in chewing gum, which residents have long since stopped explaining.
