Pasadena is older, greener and more architecturally serious than most of Los Angeles County, and it knows it.

The Rose Parade has run down Colorado Boulevard since 1890, which makes it older than the city's own water system. The Gamble House is one of the finest Craftsman buildings anywhere and sits on an ordinary residential street. Caltech and JPL are here, which means a meaningful share of what humans know about the outer solar system was worked out within a few miles of Old Pasadena.

The San Gabriels rise straight up behind the city. On a clear winter day after rain they have snow on them, and people from elsewhere refuse to believe the photographs.
