Danville sits at the base of Mount Diablo, halfway down the San Ramon Valley, on ground that was walnut and pear orchards within living memory.

If you live here, you know the shape of the place: Hartz Avenue and the old Southern Pacific depot that's now the valley museum. The Iron Horse Trail running north to Concord and south to Pleasanton where the tracks used to be, full of bikes by seven in the morning. Blackhawk out east against the mountain, Sycamore Valley and Diablo in the canyons, and Tao House up in the hills where Eugene O'Neill wrote the plays everyone had to read.
