The Tower District is the good part of downtown, built around a 1939 theater, with the record stores and the late food. The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a genuine oddity — ten acres of hand-dug rooms and courtyards a Sicilian immigrant carved out over forty years to escape the heat.

And it's the closest city to three national parks. Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia are all a morning's drive.
