There's Napa the valley and Napa the city, and people who live here are quietly particular about the difference.

The city sits at the bottom end, on a river that used to move fruit to San Francisco by barge. Downtown spent decades as the part visitors drove through on the way to somewhere more expensive, and then quietly became worth stopping in — Oxbow, the riverfront, a restaurant scene that isn't performing for anyone.

Up-valley the Silverado Trail runs the quiet eastern side while Highway 29 takes the traffic. Grapes have been in this ground since the 1860s. The people who actually make the wine mostly live down here, and go to work in trucks.
