The flag comes from a scrappy, short-lived 1846 rebellion and a hand-painted banner with a grizzly on it. The bear it was drawn from is extinct now — California put an animal on its flag and then wiped it out, which is either grim or very on brand depending on your mood. It stayed the state flag anyway, and it still reads as California from across a room.
